Archery

Standing on the line with a dozen archers in an open field and shooting down the range at targets like a scene from a Robin Hood movie. Crouching behind a shield wall with a crossbow in hand, ready to pop up and shoot at the advancing foe.

If you want to learn to shoot a bow from the line or shoot a crossbow in the heat of battle, then you may want to try SCA Archery.

SCA Archery comes in two forms. The first form is target archery.  Using long bows and wooden arrows, we shoot at a variety of targets for practice or for scores that are registered throughout our Kingdom. We also shoot in tournaments for prizes and glory. Target archery is open for participants aged 5 and up. The second form is combat archery. Using blunted arrows, we participate in the wars alongside our armoured fighters and shoot our bows or crossbows at the opposing combatants. Combat archery is open for participants aged 16 and up.

If you are interested in taking a look, come on out. Loaner equipment is available for those who wish to try, but we need advanced notification first so please contact our Knight Marshal.

Information about our armour standards and rules can be found on the Kingdom of Avacal’s Earl Marshal page.

Armoured Combat

Knights fighting for their inspirations on the tournament field.  Warriors rushing at a wall of shields with arrows flying overhead.

If you have dreams of being in armour on the field of honour with the sun shining overhead and the sound of battle in your ears, then SCA Armoured Combat may be the sport for you.

SCA Armoured Combat is a full contact medieval combat sport for participants aged 16 years and up.  Combatants wear armour and helmets and use rattan weapons as we recreate medieval armoured warfare following our rules and safety regulations. Fighting can be done one on one at practices or in tournaments, or fighting can be done at wars with teams working together to overcome their opponents. We also have rules for using archery and siege weapons in our wars.

Rapier Combat

Swords flashing in the sun as two combatants are locked in a duel. Musketeers shoot a volley at their foe before drawing their swords and advancing down the field.

If you’ve watched The Three Musketeers or The Princess Bride and loved the skill and speed of the duels on the screen, then you may want to try SCA Rapier Combat.

SCA Rapier Combat is a renaissance combat sport for participants aged 14 years and up.  Combatants wear fencing masks, protective clothing and use metal rapiers as we recreate renaissance fencing following our rules and safety regulations. Fighting can be done one on one at practices or in tournaments, or fighting can be done at wars with teams working together to overcome their opponents.

Thrown Weapons

Launching an axe at a target down range and having it hit a log with a satisfying thunk. Throwing knives trying to get perfect grouping in the bullseye.

If you like to throw knives and axes, or you want to see how you strong your spear arm is, then you may want to try SCA Thrown Weapons.

SCA Thrown Weapons is a sport where participants throw knives, axes and spears at a variety of targets for practice or for scores that are registered throughout our Kingdom. We participate in challenges and tournaments for prizes and glory. Thrown Weapons activities are open for participants aged 9 and up.

Youth Armoured Combat

Do you have a little one at home that dreams of being a knight in armour?  Have your kids grown up swinging sticks (or whatever else they can get their hands on) at each other and you want an outlet for them where they won’t cause serious harm to each other? SCA Youth Armoured Combat may be the sport you are looking for.

Youth Armoured Combat is our fighting activity for children from ages 6 to 17 that uses foam padded weapons and armour. We have three age divisions, and as our children progress through the divisions the contact level progresses from touch through to light force. The sport teaches good sportsmanship, control and teamwork. Fighting can be done one on one at practices or in tournaments, or fighting can be done at wars with teams working together to overcome their opponents.

If you are interested in taking a look, come on out. Loaner armour is available for those who wish to try, but we need advanced notification first so please contact our Warden of Youth Combat or our Knight Marshal.
