Yule 2025

Welcome Family and Friends to Our Yule Celebration

As the old year winds to a close and the new year draws nigh, come eat, drink and be merry.

Gather with friends both old and new as you admire our artisans, cheer on our youth, and listen to our bards, as they compete for the honour of becoming our Champions.

Take the opportunity to browse the merchant hall for those unique and special gifts to be bestowed, and feast upon the delicacies prepared for your culinary delight.

Arts and Sciences Championship

Attention Borealis!

For this years Borealis A & S Championship, there will be a 2 part entry.

1. Something period/persona specific. This is the one that will be judged so prepare your documentation. It can be anything. There’s no specific category.

2. Something that incorporates the Yule theme of ‘Light’. It could be something made of a light fabric, a lantern, or anything you can fit into the theme. This entry is for fun, so no official documentation is needed, but you are welcome to prepare some if you’d like.

Register by December 3rd!
I look forward to seeing everyone’s entries at Yule!

Bardic Competition

Here are the tournament rules.

We will require two pieces from each challenger. They can be stories, poems, songs, etc.

1. The first piece must be a period piece in the time that your personal persona would be alive. We ask for some kind of proof or documentation of the pieces time period. This does not need to be a Yuletide / Christmas song, but those will definitely be allowed.

2. The second piece must be something that celebrates or recognizes the Kingdom of Avacal, the Barony of Borealis,  or the SCA. This second piece does not need to be a period piece.

The first needs documentation. The second can be an original piece or a piece someone else has written. Let your imagination and bardic spirit loose to find the that piece is right for you.

We ask that you do not read directly from a document. Definitely having help to glance at as you perform is welcome. We will have a music stand for documentation if you need.

Put on a show, let your persona come out and shine. We look forward to see the competitors perform!

Yule Class List

Intro to the SCA Newcomers

Lutz Room 1 (9:30 AM)

New to the SCA? First event, or only been out a couple times? Join us for an Intro to the SCA class. Hear a brief history of the SCA and our Kingdom. Get a rundown on who’s who, how to tell people apart, what all the funny names and titles mean, basic event or court etiquette and what to expect, and a translation for all the SCA jargon you’ve been hearing. This will be an informal class and Q&A session without a strict timeline or structure, so feel free to drop in anytime between 9:30 and 10:30 for as much or as little of the class as you’d like!

Teacher: HL Sicillia Beaumont

Games of Chance

Lutz Room 1 (12:00 PM)

You will learn about three different period games played with dice: Ship-Captain-Crew, Gluckshaus, and Teetotum (which should really be played with a dreidel but a specially marked die will work just as well). Rather than playing for money, you are encouraged to play for (almost) worthless trinkets. I will have supplies for 8 people (trinkets, dice, Gluckshaus “board” and a bag to store it all) but more are welcome if they just want to see how each game is played.

Cost: $3.00 for a bag of supplies. There will be extra handouts at no cost.

Teacher: Mistress Coryn of the Wode

Persona Development

Lutz Room 2 (12:00 PM)

This lecture is an exploration of the various approaches to developing a historically plausible persona. Students should bring note-taking materials and curiosity. A handout is available. Children are welcome with adult supervision (but be warned, I drop the F-bomb frequently).

Teacher:Master Philippe de St-Denis, O.L

Introduction to Spice Mixes

Lutz Room 1 (1:00 PM)

Let’s review some of the spice mixes used with different cultures and try making our own. Please bring a pestle and mortars if you have them – I will bring a few as well. We will be grinding them and making the mixes. Some jars and plastic bags will be available to take home your creations.

Cost: $5 to cover the cost of the spices.

Teacher: Mistress Arwyn of Leicester, OL

Making Cloth Buttons

Lutz Room 2 (1:00 PM)

Cloth buttons. Learn a way to make cloth buttons to use on your garb. Supplies will be available (fabric, thread, needle, scissors). You can bring your own supplies if you have something special in mind. Please bring them if you have them.

Teacher: HL Jehannette de Brie

Beadwork

Lutz Room 1 (2:00 PM)

Embroidery -Making Christmas gift tags. No fee. Everyone needs to bring their own beads, embroidery scissors, felt, dmc thread, and a beading needle.

Teacher: A&S Champion HL Susan of Myrgan Wood Beadwork

Let’s make a Viking Style Bag

Lutz Room 2 (2:00 PM)

I’ll arrive with pre-sewn wool bags and linen linings, along with the wooden handles to make your very own Hedeby (or Birka) style bag! Perfect for carrying around mundane stuff discreetly while wearing your Viking garb! Students should bring basic sewing supplies (needles, pins, snips) and have basic hand-sewing skills. Fast sewists will finish the bags in class and will just need to add a cord of their choice to create the handle. Please alert me in advance if you are allergic to wool – I’ll bring an alternative fabric for you.

Ages: Any with appropriate sewing skills (youth will need adult accompaniment)

Students: 1-8

Length: 1 hour Cost: $15.

Teacher: HL Drífa at lækjamoti
